The Metro Nashville Police Department is in search of a man for questioning in a stabbing that killed Clayton Beathard and another man.
Clayton Beathard, who played football at Long Island University in New York City, was the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers player C.J. Beathard. Their grandfather is Pro Football Hall of Famer Bobby Beathard, a former longtime NFL executive.
According to the Nashville police, Beathard, 22, and Paul Trapeni III, 21, were stabbed and killed during a fight early Saturday morning outside of a Midtown bar.
In a press release, the department said that the altercation appears to have started when the two men were involved in an argument with a woman inside the bar. The two men were stabbed in their sides after the parties involved began to fight outside of the bar.
Beathard and Trapeni were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where they died, police said. A third man was also stabbed, but he survived and was released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
Police released a photo of a man taken by a surveillance camera and asked for help identifying him. Police didn’t say whether the man was a suspect, but wrote that he is wanted for questioning.
C.J. Beathard, 26, immediately left the team and returned to the Nashville area to support his family. He will miss Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, the 49ers announced.
He is the No. 3 quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers depth chart. In his three-year NFL career, Beathard has played 13 games.
